How To Keep Wood Floors Looking Like New

  • By Julie Adams
  • 10 Apr, 2019

Most people have multiple types of flooring in their home.  Just because we are all about carpets, doesn't mean we don't know a thing or two about wood floor care. Most people who are used to having carpets in their home don't realize that wood floors require cleaning and maintenance as well, and can often time be more susceptible to damages than carpet.

If you have a home with carpet as well as wood, here are a few quick tips for keeping your wood floors looking as great as your carpets.

Sweep Daily

Now, I know adding a daily task to your to-do list may sound daunting at first, but trust us, it's worth it. Sweeping your wood floors are the most critical thing you can do to keep them safe from ground-in grime and scratches.

If you allow dirt to pile up by not sweeping regularly, you're going to be walking around one a dirty floor, and that means you're going to be dragging debris around on your feet which in turn can scratch your floors.

Vacuum Once A Week

If you really want to make sure your floors are safe from scratches and in turn, dullness, get out the vacuum about once a week. If you're not used to vacuuming your wood floors, you want to be careful. Not all vacuums are meant to be used on wood. Some carpet-specific vacuums can actually cause more harm than good.

For homes with multiple flooring types, we suggest getting the best vacuum for wood floors, and worry about your carpets second. Most vacuums that are good for wood floors are also good for carpet, but that isn't true the other way around. Vacuums that are meant for carpets have aggressive rotating brush heads which will scratch your wood floors.

Mop Once A Month

Every month you should mop your floors to make sure they stay looking fresh and clean. With wood, you need to use a minimal amount of water. Using too much water can result in your wood floors absorbing the excess water which can lead to buckling down the road.

Also, be sure to use a cleaner that is designed for wood floors. If you use the wrong products, they can leave a residue on your floors rather than leaving them looking shiny and clean.

Re-coat Every Few Years

The last step to keeping your wood floors looking great is to recoat them every 3-5 years. This allows you to apply a new finish to your floors, which will drastically extend how long they last. Make sure you match the type of coat and finish to your existing floors, and don't be afraid to hire a professional if need be. If you aren't confident with this sort of DIY project, hiring a professional is a safe bet. This way, you'll know the job is getting done right, and you won't be risking causing any damages.

Conclusion

If you're used to having carpets, maintaining wood floors can be a new experience! While yes, wood floors are a bit more sensitive to damages than carpet, they have a way of making your home look more elegant, but only if they are adequately maintained.

If you have a home with wood floors and carpet, use these tips to keep your wood floors clean, but make sure to call the professionals at Carpet Zen when it comes to keeping your carpets, tile and upholstery looking like new. We are here to make sure your home is looking beautiful year-round.

Tips on cleaning microfiber furniture

Steam cleaning is the best way to clean almost any carpet or rug.  We use steam cleaning, because of it gives us the ability to get out most stains, it's sanitary and we don't have to use strong chemicals. The beauty of steam cleaning is that it effectively trades heat for chemicals without sacrificing strength. In fact, when used correctly, steam can quickly kill 99.99% of germs and bacteria, making it a safe, healthy, eco-friendly, all-natural way to clean your home from carpets, to rugs, to tile and grout and upholstery.

When you use steam to clean, the tiny hot vapor molecules penetrate the pores of the surface you're cleaning, and as they come in contact with the cool surface of the pores, they expand and force all dirt, debris, and bacteria to the surface.  Then our powerful vacuum extracts this dirt, debris and bacteria.  It is a wonderful process to watch and we can feel good about the service we provide our customers.

We may be a bit biased, but we just don't see how shampooing or a "dry clean" can get the same level of clean or disinfection.  Now, if you use a home shampooer between professional steam clean, that is fine.  Just be sure to run the machine over the wet areas multiple times, so you extract as much of the shampoo and water out as possible.  Leaving shampoo in your carpets will actually make them get dirty faster as the soap will attract and hold on to dirt and debris.

Pets are awesome and part of the family, but they can create some odors.  We love to help by pretreating carpets, rugs and upholstery with enzymes, steam cleaning and deodorizing, but it we know you need a maintenance plan between Carpet Zen visits.

We suggest you get some good enzymes.  Good enzymes will actually breakdown the organic materials left behind by pets including dander, urine, feces and vomit.  I know not fun to think about...but it does happen.  Good enzymes will break these organic materials down and leave a pleasant scent and actually get rid of the odors.  It works, but does take time.  We recommend that you clean messes up the best you can, then spray enzymes on the area and leave them.  Let the enzymes to their thing.  You may need to spray the area everyday for days or even weeks, before the odor is completely gone.  Urine odor from small dogs and cats (any size) are more difficult to eliminate, but can be done with the consistent application of good enzymes.

Where do I get good enzymes?

We have not had any of our customers have a good experience with enzymes purchased at the pet store.  Therefore, we can sell you enzymes, or we have also had good experience with Bubba's Terminator Enzymes (available on Amazon).  If you'd like to get a bottle of enzymes from Carpet Zen, just call us at 512-650-2500 or email us at info@mycarpetzen.com.  We sell bottles for $15, plus tax.

It is also helpful to get your carpets, rugs, tile & grout and upholstery cleaned professionally at least once a year.  However, if your pet has an accident and you can't seem to get it cleaned up sufficiently, call us and we'd be happy to serve and help you get out the stains and odors.  We can't guarantee that we can get out everything, but we can guarantee that we're good at our job and we'll work hard for you.

Moreover, if you have questions or would like to schedule an appointment with Carpet Zen, call us at 512-650-2500.  We serve Leander, Cedar Park, Liberty Hill, Georgetown, Round Rock, Pflugerville, Hutto, Lakeway and Austin, Texas.
